The original installation of Axe head to handle did no favors to the wood on the handle (basically the unfinished axe head caused heavy chipping on the wood handle) which necessitated much more sanding before I felt the axe would be usable as an axe.įor the price I do like it. It took me several hours of sharpening the head and rounding the edges of the female portion of the axe head to match the handle. That set screw ain't going to do didily to hold the head on if you actually try to use it as an axe out of box. Really if Cold Steel was being honest they would send the head unattached to the shaft with no set screw as a insult to the buyers intelligence. I had already viewed several YouTube reviews of this axe and knew well ahead of time to expect something in an insultingly unfinished state. It is a magnificent piece that I would recommend as a versatile tool to have for camping or for the garage. In many respects, this is less a replica carried at Renaissance fairs and more a functional tool that demands to be used as the Norse people did in their day taken seriously and with great respect. I do love the design, and more importantly, the versatility of this axe. For bushcraft, and off the haft, it provides a nice steel for striking a fire it does nicely for hand-cutting spikes for tent stakes shaving tinder for a fire and as well as a solid handle for ulu work. Will it tear down a massive tree? Not really, but it will take down smaller trunks less that 25cm/10 in. The design is unlike another company's bearded axe, this is the real working bearded axe that cleaves nicely. The blade is what you pay for, and you do get a strong, reliable axe head that delivers. Out of the box, if you take a look at the top and bottom (where the shoulder meets the head), you will see a large amount of space this may cause the head to move, even if you decide to use the Allen/hex screw and not modify the haft. There are online tutorials for this, and it does improve the axe greatly if you choose this option beware, though: Cold Steel does NOT make a replacement haft for this bearded axe should you mess it up! Thankful to have a haft that was arrow straight, as it was key to making this an awesome buy.įirst off, I HAD to modify the haft for it to work as a bearded axe was intended: removable with a friction fit. ![]()
